The future is here, and it’s bringing big changes to our daily life! Are you ready? Take a look at these 5 future technologies that will be mainstream by 2020:
Let’s start with a fun one: Virtual Reality! We’ve all seen the headsets for gaming, but VR promises so much more. Augmented/virtual reality hardware sales are said to boom to $42 billion in 2020 from $2.4 billion in 2016 (a HUGE 1650% increase!). Why the boom? Because VR tech can be used in so many sectors.
Medical professionals can use it for education, surgery prep or patient rehabilitation. Architects can render projects in immersive 3D. E-commerce & advertising can use it for marketing in a new, fun way.
Another boom we’ll be seeing soon is GLOBAL INTERNET. Today we have just two methods to provide internet: broadband and wireless.
Both limit access to rural/remote/impoverished areas because of intensive infrastructural demands. But top players in the internet game are working on making internet available all over the world! Google has Project Loon, aka launching high-altitude balloons 20 miles into the atmosphere and a fleet of 180 satellites that will orbit the globe and provide internet access to absolutely everyone. Elon Musk’s SpaceX is working on a similar plan, while Facebook’s plan is to deploy solar-powered drones that will fly uninterrupted around the globe for months or even years!
Back on Earth, exciting things are happening too. Automation (think robots!) is finally stepping out of industrial production lines and into sectors like F&B, Medical & Customer Service. Advancements in Robotics, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence are helping automation move from routine tasks to complex decision-making tasks.
Speaking of AI, it’s set to undertake more humans tasks by 2020.
Today, it allows computers to READ (all text types), SEE (facial recognition), LISTEN (voice commands) & SPEAK (Siri, Alexa, etc.).
It can even record emotions (affective computing). But soon, thanks to advancements in NLP (Natural Language Processing), computers, apps & devices will be able to understand everything, like sarcasm, puns, and double meaning contexts! Users will be able to ask things in their natural way of talking, not in words that are “right” for machines/software to understand.
Which brings us to Biometric identification and commands! It’s only a matter of time until every device we use can perform actions with a command of our voice.
Mixed with NLP, AI & Machine Learning, voice-based applications is finding its way into users’ everyday activities. Facial Recognition is also going mainstream by 2020, & your face will be your ideal technology partner! What started with iPhone X with its face ID will be used for several actions, like unlocking your house or car, or even withdrawing money from the ATM!
Now I can’t wait for 2020! Can you imagine all the new things we will be using in daily life?
